Nigeria’s energy inflation rate rose to 4.69% in August 2026, up from 4.40% in July, reversing the decline recorded in the previous month.

The latest figure represents a 0.29 percentage-point increase in the annual change in energy prices, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Tuesday, September 15.

The increase indicates renewed pressure in energy-related prices even as broader inflationary pressures continued to ease during the month.

Headline inflation extends disinflation trend

Nigeria’s headline inflation rate, however, eased marginally to 15.39% in August from 15.43% in July.

The 0.04 percentage-point decline marks the third consecutive month of moderation in the headline inflation rate, extending the country’s ongoing disinflation trend.

The divergence between the two measures highlights the uneven pace of price moderation across different components of the consumer basket, with energy prices recording an uptick even as overall inflation continued to ease.
