FG Commissions 3.3MW Solar Mini-Grid at Yakubu Gowon University
The Federal Government has commissioned a 3.3MWp solar hybrid mini-grid with 2MWh battery storage at Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja, as part of efforts to improve reliable electricity supply to federal tertiary institutions.
The project, commissioned on Wednesday, has 3MW of AC output capacity, a dedicated connection to the national grid, as well as a Renewable Energy Workshop and Training Centre.
Battery system to support critical loads
The 2MWh battery storage system is designed to provide electricity to critical loads beyond daylight hours, helping to maintain power supply when solar generation is unavailable.
The dedicated grid connection, meanwhile, is intended to serve non-critical electricity demand when the solar system is not generating power.
The combination of solar generation, battery storage and grid connectivity is expected to provide the university with a more reliable and resilient electricity supply while reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
Project implemented under EEP Phase 2
The project was implemented under Phase 2 of the Energizing Education Programme (EEP), a federal government initiative aimed at improving electricity supply to public tertiary institutions.
Phase 2 covers seven universities and two teaching hospitals as part of efforts to provide more reliable and sustainable power infrastructure across federal institutions.
The Federal Government is currently implementing Phase 3 of the programme, which is expected to extend the initiative to additional educational institutions.
