The Tax Ombud and Chief Executive of the Office of the Tax Ombud, John Nwabueze, has highlighted the critical role of the media in advancing ongoing fiscal reforms under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging journalists to intensify public education on taxpayer rights and dispute resolution mechanisms.

Speaking during an engagement with business editors in Lagos, Nwabueze called on the media to help raise awareness about the functions of the Office of the Tax Ombud, particularly how taxpayers can file complaints and seek redress on tax-related issues at no cost.

He disclosed that the newly established office is set to launch its official website and a toll-free call centre, aimed at improving accessibility and responsiveness to taxpayer concerns.

According to Nwabueze, the Office of the Tax Ombud was created as an independent and impartial institution to safeguard taxpayer rights, resolve grievances, and promote fairness in tax administration. He noted that the initiative provides Nigerians with a new channel to actively engage in the country’s economic development.

“The establishment of this office reflects Nigeria’s commitment to building a modern, people-centred tax system that balances revenue generation with fairness and due process,” he said.

He added that strengthening trust in tax administration would encourage voluntary compliance and support broader fiscal reforms under the government’s economic agenda, positioning taxation as a tool for inclusive growth and shared national responsibility.

Nwabueze explained that the office serves as a bridge between taxpayers and revenue authorities, offering accessible dispute resolution mechanisms that are essential for transparency and effective governance.

He also clarified that the office does not determine tax liabilities nor replace existing institutions such as the courts or the Tax Appeal Tribunal. Instead, its role is to ensure that tax processes are conducted fairly, transparently, and accountably.

Beyond resolving disputes, the Tax Ombud noted that the office will identify recurring challenges within the tax system and recommend reforms aimed at improving efficiency and strengthening public confidence.

He commended President Tinubu’s administration for pursuing what he described as a transformative tax reform agenda focused on fairness, inclusiveness, and long-term sustainability.
