The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has condemned some tertiary institutions for delaying or refusing to refund students whose tuition fees had already been paid before the processing and disbursement of their NELFUND loans.
The criticism was contained in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi.
According to the Fund, some institutions have failed to return payments to eligible students even after receiving tuition fees directly from NELFUND, raising concerns about compliance with the scheme’s implementation guidelines.
NELFUND also expressed concern over reports that some tertiary institutions have arbitrarily increased tuition fees and other charges, warning that such actions could undermine the objective of making higher education more accessible and affordable.
The Fund reaffirmed its commitment to protecting beneficiaries of the student loan programme and urged institutions to act transparently, promptly refund affected students, and refrain from imposing unjustified fee increases.
