The Federal Government has declared June 29 to July 3, 2026, as National Learning Assessment Week as part of preparations for Nigeria’s first nationwide learning assessment exercise.

The announcement was made by the Federal Ministry of Education in a statement signed by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade.

The initiative is expected to cover all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), marking a significant step towards strengthening data-driven educational planning and policy development in Nigeria.

What the assessment aims to achieve

According to the ministry, the nationwide assessment is designed to generate reliable and comprehensive data on students’ learning achievements across the country.

The exercise will provide critical insights into the performance of learners and help policymakers better understand the strengths and challenges within Nigeria’s education system.

The data generated is expected to support:

  • Educational planning and policy formulation.
  • Evidence-based reforms in the education sector.
  • Improved allocation of educational resources.
  • Enhanced teaching and learning outcomes.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of educational performance nationwide.

Significance of the initiative

The National Learning Assessment Week represents Nigeria’s first coordinated nationwide effort to measure learning outcomes across all states and the FCT using a unified framework.

Education stakeholders have long emphasized the importance of reliable learning assessment data in addressing issues related to quality of education, curriculum effectiveness, teacher performance, and student achievement.

By conducting the assessment on a national scale, the Federal Government aims to establish a stronger evidence base for future interventions and reforms within the sector.

Expected impact

The results of the assessment are expected to provide policymakers, education administrators, development partners, and schools with valuable information that can guide strategic decision-making.

The exercise is also expected to help identify learning gaps, regional disparities, and areas requiring targeted support, ultimately contributing to efforts aimed at improving educational standards and outcomes across the country.

Looking ahead

As preparations continue for the assessment, the Federal Ministry of Education has reiterated its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s education system through data-driven policies and reforms.

The National Learning Assessment Week is expected to serve as a foundation for future assessments and educational improvement initiatives, providing a clearer picture of learning outcomes across the country and supporting efforts to enhance the quality of education for Nigerian students.
