Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has said the removal of Wale Edun as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy was largely due to political considerations, rather than performance.
Speaking on the recent cabinet reshuffle, Dalung argued that Edun’s exit reflected a broader effort by President Bola Tinubu to realign his administration ahead of future political developments.
President Tinubu on Tuesday dismissed Edun alongside the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, in what the presidency described as a minor cabinet reshuffle.
Following the changes, Taiwo Oyedele, who previously served as Minister of State for Finance, was elevated to the position of Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. Meanwhile, Muttaqha Rabe Darma was nominated to head the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the reshuffle was intended to “strengthen cohesion and synergy in governance” and enhance the delivery of economic policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Despite his removal, Edun—considered a close ally of the president—was credited with overseeing key economic reforms, including efforts to stabilise the naira, boost foreign reserves above $40 billion, and sustain GDP growth. However, his tenure also faced criticism over rising inflation and persistent power challenges.
Some reports suggested that Edun’s exit may be linked to health concerns, with sources claiming he had sought to step down since late last year to address a deteriorating condition.
Dalung, however, maintained that beyond health or economic performance, the reshuffle reflects strategic political adjustments by the administration as it prepares for the 2027 elections.
All affected officials have been directed to complete handover processes on or before the close of business on Thursday, April 23, 2026.
